Recently, the NZ Herald published an article describing the negative effects of the Netflix series “13 Reasons Why”. This has raised many concerns about the impact in our community among vulnerable youth.

It is a good reminder of the need to engage our children continually on the dangers surrounding the TV shows and social media that they may be watching.

I get asked a lot about what device their child should be buying for use in school or to enable to finish their homework at home. The minimum specifications for MHJC states the following :-

Following our successful 2nd year with CYOD (Choose Your Own Device) in the school, we have reviewed our position on the type of devices allowed in the school and I am happy to announce that there is no change in the type of devices allowed in the school.

MHJC has always been a device agnostic school and we encourage students to bring devices that they already own to school, provided they meet the minimum requirements, which are as follows:-

An Introduction

Warm greetings to all parents on this sunny (and cold) Thursday. My name is Mark Chang and I am the ICT manager for the Mission Heights Schools. It is truly a privilege to work alongside some of the brightest individuals I've ever met in the course of my work here and one thing I have learnt here in the school is to adopt a lifelong attitude of learning. I hope we all can impart such an attitude to our children.

However, the malware ecosystem is rapidly changing in reponse to market trends. Most malware authors have recognised the fact that many operating systems are being locked down, iOS and ChromeOS being a prime example. This has resulted inthe shift to malware, specifically …

An article on gaming on Stuff's website has Willowbank Primary's principal Deidre Alderson speak out on the dangers of online gaming in the lives of today's youth.

Alderson hit the nail on the head when she mentioned that the issue was that what the students did at home was something she had no control over. This is also true in the Mission Heights Schools and something we observe on a weekly basis.

The past month has seen an extraordinary amount in our internet usage. Looking at our internet logs, our traffic can roughly be broken down into the following pie chart.

An average of 150GB of data goes through our internet filtering appliance a day, and therein lies part of the issue. Our filtering platform is well used by teachers to monitor our students' usage of the internet, which contributes to an increased load on that platform.
